Shan national day from the Shan side of the border. I live in the heart of the Golden Triangle mountains, nestled against porous borders that separate unstable nations fighting for their identity... On the map, my village is on the Thai side of the border, but we speak Shan, or even Pa O here, more than Thai, and everybody, at one time or another, come from “the other side of the border.” From the center of the village, a 4 km trail leads directly into Shan State... on the map you will cross into Burma, but don't expect to see any Burmese officials, or Thailand immigration officer; crossing the “border” will be negotiated with the Thai and Shan army. Once you arrive, you are in Shan territory. Another trail to the east, about the same length, will take you directly to Wa State. No more internationally recognized than Shan State, the territory, administered by the Wa army, defies all Burmese control... #goldentriangle #borders #shanstate #Thailand #borderstories
